SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association 9/11 Memorial Scholarships

The SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association offers annual scholarships to honor our seven alumni who died during the tragic events at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The annual scholarships are awarded to rising second, third, or fourth-year full-time SUNY Oneonta students who demonstrate leadership and good citizenship. Selection will be based upon a variety of criteria, including leadership, citizenship, and other contributions to the quality of life at SUNY Oneonta.

A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Students will have until Monday, March 18 to submit a complete application with all the accompanying materials, including: 

  • Personal contact information
  • Resume (academic honors, other experiences, services, leadership, professional employment history)
  • A 500-word essay
  • Name and contact information (email) of a SUNY Oneonta faculty member or professional staff member who will provide a confidential letter of reference.

Recipients will be selected by a committee of Alumni Association Board members. Seven scholarships will be awarded. Scholarships for the 2019-2020 fiscal year will be $1,500. Scholarship recipients will be required to participate in SUNY Oneonta’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony. The scholarship is renewable until graduation provided the recipient continues to demonstrate leadership, extracurricular involvement, good citizenship, and maintain a GPA of 3.0.

Applications for the 2019-2020 scholarships will be accepted beginning February 18, 2019.

Essay topic: The terrorist attacks that took place on September 11th, 2001 continue to have an impact on our daily lives. Please submit a 500 word essay on how the attacks have had an effect on your family/loved ones, or on society as a whole. The essay may be based on personal experiences or reflective in nature. Please type or copy and paste (recommended) your essay into the text area below. You may also email your essay to alumni@oneonta.edu, or deliver it in person to the Office of Alumni Engagement at 118 Alumni Hall.

Please include the name and email address of one faculty member or professional staff member who will provide a confidential letter of reference in support of your application.
